Illustration Friday - Subterranean also GPP Street Team 'Grabbing a tissue'
Well I didn't think I'd make this Illustration Friday as I just couldn't make up my mind what I wanted to do but the thing that was always coming to mind when I thought about this word was 'under the surface of the sea'. I love painting mermaids but this one is a bit different as I decided to try painting a picture over two different canvas'. I really enjoyed it and felt that it helped me to simplify things, I didn't need much of a back ground as I just wanted to create the feeling of movement like she was gliding under the water. I used lots more texture than normal with this and I'm getting quite addicted, I used tissue paper and texture paste with acrylic paints and had lots of fun slapping it all on!
I think I might pop this one in my shop!
I also just discovered another challenge site, Michelle Ward's GPP Street Team. This month they're 'grabbing a tissue'. If you would like to find out more about this site click here

Wow! That's a lot more textured than your previous works. How exciting! I really like the idea of splitting the picture - it certainly adds a whole new dynamic to the painting. Well done! xxx
Mermaid looks awesome, Nicola! :) Her face is stunning and I love that you made it on two canvases. Looks great!
It's lovely Nicola! I do love mermaids. I'm actually painting one right now but it's quite big so it's going to take a while. I'll show pictures just as soon as I get my own computer back!xx
I love the two panel idea. Very neat! And thanks for the comment on my blog. Have a great day!

Hello Nicola. Nice to meet you, and have you come play with the street team! I really like how you made your mermaid into a diptych. And it's cool to observe how you used tissue paper to get the texture in her scales. There are lots of possibilities with this tissue tool!
I love the texture on her scales...beautiful piece! I hope you had a great St. Patty's day! : )
Nicola, I have MISSED you! I am catching up on all of your beautiful work..you are so impressive and such a multi-talented lady. I hope all has been well for you -love the recent paintings of you ladies, and I smiled at your son's note for the tooth-fairy..so sweet! Congratulations on the Geisha painting as well! I will be by again soon - still plowing through work and hope to show something sooner than later. Wishing you a great rest of the week. Hugs!

I love that you're getting into texture! Beautiful, Nic!!
I agree with everything said here: I love your texture (especially the hair) and the way you broke it up into 2 paintings - just stunning! AND I am SO EXCITED to tell you that I got my "Tooth Fairy" in the mail today and LOVE it!!! The details, the hint of scrapbook paper underneath and most especially the crisp, bright colors and big eyes - I am so excited and honored to have it in my home. Thank you too for your message to Kendra, Kristin xo
