Sunday Sketches and Illustration Friday 'Ahead'

Well I'm very early for my Sunday sketches this week but i really wanted to post a page from my sketch book that I drew last night. I'm working on another mermaid painting, I seem to come back to mermaids whenever I feel like I'm having an artists block. I'm half way through my painting so I shall post it soon. I wanted to draw my ladies a little differently and I focused mostly on the lips which seemed to give her a whole new character! Anyway here are my sketches! Click on the Sunday Sketch bar at the side of my blog to see more Sunday sketches (you might have to wait until tomorrow though as I'm a bit early with mine :0) )

You may be wondering where this sketch would fit in with Illustration Friday's theme of Ahead? Well I feel at the moment like I need to step up my art a little and push myself more. I want to find a more polished look, to keep my style and keep painting whimsical pretty characters but I really wanted to move ahead with my art and not stay stuck in a rut. I really should do more sketching as it really helps me with ideas, I've just gotton so used to slapping paint on a canvas that I go straight to that sometimes. Anyway here are my new improved ladies, well I hope they are improved.

Beautiful sketches!! You know, I have never sketched anything and sometimes I think I should start. But somehow, I like the trial and error method of painting... These two faces are just precious!! I especially love the dreamy look of the lower of the faces! :) Silke

These ladies are beautiful! The top one is my favorite! I agree with you, I get in a rut, too! Let that be the theme of the week, pushing ourselves ahead, to the next level. Great post, happy Sunday....Heather

Oh yes! I think that they are lovely!! I noticed the lips right away - your girls remind me of the fairies from the disney Tinkerbell movies - so pretty and wide-eyed!
Congrats too on being featured this week on MMM! Kristin xo

Nicola! They are lovely mermaids...and what you've said about moving ahead and pushing yourself is exactly what I've been trying to do with my work. Your sketches are fantastic...and I think you have continued to move forward with your work through these many months I've been visiting. Look at all of your wonderful characters..they are whimsical, bold, and beautiful. These lovely ladies will have glorious lips, I'm sure. I am so thankful for your kind visits, Nicola...you are such a gem. Can't wait to see the finished pieces!

Nicola, what a beautiful start to a beautiful girl/mermaid. Wow! I was just telling my bf on how much your artwork has seriously improved since I first met you. You are growing so much and I feel blessed to be a part of it. :)

Happy Sunday!

Hi Nicola, your hard work is giving you amazing results! Sketching helps so much doesn't it? I get impatient and get right on with the painting but I can see how experimenting with the underlying drawing brings so much to the final piece! I love the way you've done her tail and bikini. I really must slow down and draw more :)xx

these are wonderful, I see what you mean about how changing the lips can really make a difference. I think this is true of every detail. It is fun to hear that you are challenging yourself to step up your art. Change is fun.
